      <image:title>Home - Our origins</image:title>
<image:caption>The idea for the Climate Action SG Alliance first emerged at a roundtable hosted by Senior Minister of State for the Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment Dr Amy Khor on 3 January 2018 and attended by leading green groups and individuals in Singapore. The Alliance was then formally announced in Parliament on 6 March 2018 at the Committee of Supply debate by Dr Khor, where she shared that it was agreed in her dialogue with NGOs that climate action collaboration and co-ordination across all stakeholders could be stronger. Through a grassroots effort, the Alliance — chaired by Jessica Cheam (2018 to 2021), founder and managing director of Eco-Business — met for the first time on 4th April 2018 to set out its mission, objectives and what it wants to achieve.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Home - We believe in collective action</image:title>
<image:caption>Since 2018, the Alliance has been working on several initiatives on climate action. The Alliance identified and adopted various channels to spur 3P (people, public, private) support and action, so as to help Singapore raise awareness on climate action, with the aim to achieve Singapore’s sustainability targets, under the Paris Climate Agreement, and to reduce our carbon emissions. In their first year, the Alliance met every three months, with many separate meetings between members in between these quarterly meetings, as well as with other organisations and representatives from the Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment. The Alliance undertook three broad projects under the following names and themes: Project Education, Project Business and Project Recycling.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The SYCA successfully launched the Citizens’ Guide to E-Waste in 2020. The guide was a large-scale effort by the group, supported by several CASA members and consolidates information about e-waste in Singapore. SYCA also held the Singapore Local Conference for Youth in January 2020. It was observed that because of the inability to travel, SYCA members have actually become more active in regional and international events online.</image:caption>

      <image:title>CASA Initiatives - 2018-2019 | Project Business - Part II: “Plastic Purge”</image:title>
<image:caption>Part 2 of Project Business was termed “Plastic Purge”. This was an initiative to rid offices of single-use plastic which would help address the global plastic crisis we face today. This was based on the fact that Singaporeans use at least 1.76 billion disposable plastic items a year, with less than 20% of our plastic waste getting recycled and, on the knowledge that discarded plastics kill millions of marine creatures and birds every year, with ingested plastics now entering our food chain (Hong, 2018).</image:caption>

<image:caption>“Plastic Purge”’ aimed to raise awareness of the dangers that using plastic can bring and how, as an individual and/or organisation, one can reduce one’s use of plastic. The Plastic Purge website, which was launched at MEWR’s Year of Climate Action Appreciation Luncheon 28 November 2018, invites viewers to take the pledge to reduce their plastic usage. The Plastic Purge website can be accessed here: https://plasticpurge.eco-business.com/. Letters were also sent out by Alliance members to companies, encouraging them to take the pledge.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Alliance member Fuziah’s focus was on kindergartens, from the design of the kindergarten to the daily practices and activities of the children themselves, such as upcycling waste. This was education of the children from an early age. Alliance members ZeroWasteSG and SYCA also conducted their own advocacy and education initiatives throughout the year at various educational institutions. For SYCA, this included a Climate Action Carnival in June where they commissioned an art installation entitled “+✓” that integrated recycled drink cans and plastic bottles. ZeroWasteSG conducted an inaugural neighbourhood waste audit in May and rolled out a Bring Your Own Singapore movement in an effort to reduce waste.</image:caption>

<image:caption>WWF-Singapore, guided by a focus group discussion with Eco-Schools Educators in 2017, created the Schools for Climate Action project. WWF global climate change expert Sandeep Chamling Rai helped in the design of the programme which aims to reduce the carbon emissions of participating Eco-Schools by 36% by 2020. Schools for Climate Action introduced students to the efficient management of six areas—Electricity, Water, Materials, Food, Transport and Waste—according to the GHG protocol. A Panda Ambassador, Wesley Poh, also went to the COP24 in Poland and reported that while education is critical, how education is carried out is just as important.</image:caption>

      <image:title>CASA Initiatives - 2018-2019 | Project Education - EB’s “Changing Course” Exhibition</image:title>
<image:caption>While not exclusively for youth, Eco-Business’ “Changing Course” exhibition showcased the impacts of climate change in an eye-opening way. Based on Jessica Cheam’s participation in a February 2018 expedition to Antarctica to learn more about how climate change was affecting the continent, “Changing Course” featured about 70 photos and a short film documentary entitled “From Asia to Antarctica”. The exhibition ran from 4 June till 12 July 2018 at the Green Pavilion in the Singapore Botanic Gardens, with satellite exhibitions at the Marina Barrage and OCBC bank branches. The aim was to raise awareness about the global climate crisis and the urgent need to shift to more sustainable ways of living. Access: Eco-business' Changing Course Exhibition</image:caption>
